Sunset, cycling and photo snapping

A new week and what beautiful weekend it was here in Amsterdam. Most people would be lounging on the grass soaking up the last drops of sun, or at a bar drinking like a fish. Not me, I spent Saturday evening speed cycling around Amsterdam like a mad man participating in Urban Photo Race.

The Urban Photo Race new identity — designed by Studio Paul Bergman, became alive this weekend and i’ve been fortunate enough to work on this branding project, designing the participant badge, flags, and banners. It was great to see these in use during the race. This was the first night edition, which in total lasted 6 hours. The race challenges you to interpret 3 assigned themes and from this create a photo series. This year the themes were: Gezellig, Under the Spotlight and Dreamer. 3 very broad themes that i’m sure will create an exciting and diverse range of photography.

Initially I thought - go home and get a plan together. Six hours sounds like an awful long time but it went incredibly fast. My very loose plan began to fizzle out after the first checkpoint and I began moving without thinking about where I was going which felt exciting and free. Did this perhaps lend itself to my photos?

However I also wanted to capture something more intimate, and interestingly photographed a man and woman on their first date in Cafe Brecht.

Gezellig, a word that encompasses the heart of Dutch culture was the theme I was worried about most. In just 3 photos I needed to capture, family, friends, safety and warmth. The weather worked in my favour as Westerpark was populated with groups of family and friends enjoying the sun. However I also wanted to capture something more intimate, and interestingly photographed a man and woman on their first date in Cafe Brecht.

Midnight was the deadline for all participants to digitally submit their 9 photos. After a very rushed hour of editing I finally got my photos in. To my knowledge I then realised that I submitted the wrong photo by mistake. In Amsterdam-Noord whilst waiting for the ferry to central, I took a photo of a lamp post on the pier which would have been perfect for ‘Under the Spotlight’. At least I can show it on here though. I’m unsure about my submission, but regardless I had a lot of fun. Could I handle the 12 hour race - I doubt it, my legs are still burning.
