If you haven’t heard of Blackpool, it’s a seaside town in North England. When people ask me whereabouts it is, I usually say near Manchester, but it’s really not. Why am I talking about Blackpool? 🤔
Blackpool, unfortunately that's where i’m from. I’m Andrew – a British Graphic designer with a strong passion for typography and design for print. I started my internship here at Studio Paul Bergman in March, before that I was interning for 6 months in Croatia. It’s always been a little fantasy of mine to live in Amsterdam – not for the reasons most Brits usually think. But i’ve always been drawn to the relaxed culture, and the thought of cycling everywhere - let’s face it, is pretty sweet.
Before coming here, i’d heard a lot of people say how difficult it is to find somewhere to live. Thankfully I had a couple of friends here before my arrival which made viewings and travel arrangements much easier.
You know - that social media platform that has hundreds of embarrassing photos of you from when you was 13 years old.
The best way (I found) of finding accommodation was through Facebook. You know - that social media platform that has hundreds of embarrassing photos of you from when you was 13 years old. To avert people from looking at that, I designed a poster that I could send to those advertising rooms. I wanted the poster to be minimal with clear communication, but at the same time show some personality. This resulted in a fast pace gif (gif 1, gif 2) of my face laughing.
But it worked! Fortunately I’m now going to be staying in the currently sunny Amsterdam for an extra month.
I have found doing international internships to be very rewarding and it’s so fascinating to experience design from another culture. I highly recommend it. Also, it’s really not that hard to do, if I can do it, anyone can.
